Scorpions 'Think Pink' to Support Those Battling Breast Cancer

Women Wearing Pink Shirts and Ribbons

It’s a startling fact—1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Many of these women are family members, friends, coworkers, and others who are near and dear to our hearts. It’s our job to come together and serve as a support system for breast cancer patients wherever we can—and to help raise awareness about how to detect the disease early.

To show our solidarity of support for those who are fighting breast cancer, our Scorpion team came to work wearing “Think Pink” T-shirts. Many expressed support for a couple of our very own Scorpions, including Director of Internet Marketing Holleigh Taufer and Internet Marketing Manager Kat Jones.

Holleigh was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 years ago and has been dominating the fight since then. Kat is currently undergoing treatment. Kat’s husband Brian Jones, who is a Client Solutions Manager at Scorpion, said their family has received overwhelming support from their coworkers.

“For my wife and our family, the battle against breast cancer is a part of our daily lives,” Brian said. “The people at Scorpion have made it impossible for us to forget that happiness and great things are a part of our daily lives, too. Scorpion is a company and a culture that cares on the next level, and words can’t express how grateful I am.”

“No one can go through this alone,” said Kat (shown left). “Because of my Scorpion family, I know I’ll never have to.”

One Scorpion employee—Christina Safayee, Accounts Receivable Manager at Scorpion—said she wore her “Think Pink” T-shirt for her coworkers, but also for other breast cancer patients and survivors she knows. Christina’s next-door neighbor, who is like a grandmother to Christina’s two children, battled breast cancer 10 years ago and recently relapsed. She also said her fiancee’s aunt fought breast cancer 8 years ago and is luckily cancer-free today.

“We feel very strongly about staying educated, positive, and strong,” Christina said. “This is not a fight against a disease that may impact my life, but against a disease that is already impacting all of our lives.”

Early Detection & Support for Breast Cancer Research

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, it is estimated that more than 252,700 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. this year alone. Men get breast cancer as well, with 2,470 men expected to be diagnosed with the disease this year.

Women and men can significantly increase their chances of survival through early detection. The National Breast Cancer Foundation shares that when breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%. We encourage everyone to regularly check for lumps through breast self-exams and keep up with the recommended health screenings, including mammograms.

For those who want to learn more about breast cancer and early detection, organizations such as the Susan G. Komen® organization, the American Cancer Society, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation provide excellent resources to keep you informed.

We also encourage anyone who wants to support breast cancer patients to donate to nonprofit organizations such as those mentioned above. Through your contribution, you can support research for a cure, as well as provide valuable resources for women and men who currently fighting breast cancer.
