Now imagine you’ve given your store or office a complete remodel. You redid all of your interior design, and you upgraded your technology, making your space high-tech and up to the latest standards—but your business is in a location that is difficult to find, so you get very little foot traffic.
Well, this is the same thing that happens when you have a website that isn’t getting enough traffic. You may have a beautifully designed site that uses the most up-to-date web technology and design standards, but it all goes to waste because no one’s visiting your site. Or you might be getting the wrong types of site visitors—like people who don’t need your services or product, or people who are outside the area you serve. Remember—poor web traffic leads to missed opportunities for attracting new business!
So how do you fix the problem? You use Internet marketing and advertising to get your website noticed by the right types of online users at the right time. This requires having a presence on search engines, on other websites that your prospects may visit, on social networking sites, on YouTube, and other areas of the web.
Here are 3 ways to boost your website traffic:
1. Advertise in search engines such as Google or Bing.
This is called paid search advertising, also known as pay-per-click advertising, or PPC. Here’s how it works. You bid on the keywords you want your business to get found for. (Think of a keyword as the question someone types into Google.) Then, when someone searches for that keyword, your ad gets shown on the results page—preferably right at the top. People see your ad, which looks a lot like a regular unpaid result, and if they like what they see, they click on it and end up on your website. Paid search is a great way to boost your exposure in search results and drive more web traffic.
2. Build up your SEO.
SEO stands for search engine optimization. Think of SEO as your way of showing Google that your website is a good match for its online searchers. Through SEO, you optimize your website to be both search engine-friendly and user-friendly. It involves keyword optimization, development of high-quality content, link building, and much more. Once you build up your SEO, people who search for businesses like yours will start seeing your business listed in the top unpaid (or organic) search results. And better organic rankings means more clicks to your website!
3. Use display ads to get seen on other websites.
You know the ads you see on the page when you’re reading an article online or you’re just browsing the web? Those are display ads. When you use Google or Bing display ads, you place your ads on websites that your prospects are most likely to visit. The goal is to capture users’ attention and get them to visit your website. You can even use retargeting to keep showing your ads to people who have already visited your site. The more past visitors see your ad over and over again, the more they notice your brand—which can get you return visits.
These are just three tips to get you started. There are also other forms of advertising you can use, such as social media ads and video ads, but we’ll save that for another time.
