Happy National Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day! To show how much we appreciate their hard work, we decided to treat some of our local pediatric hematology/oncology nurses to some Krispy Kreme donuts to sweeten their shift. Twenty-two dozen donuts were picked up & delivered this morning for the outpatient & inpatient nurses at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Another eight dozen will make their way over tonight for the night shift.
With the national holiday kicking off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to recognize these hardworking nurses who care for children struggling with cancer, as well as blood disorders like hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and other anemias. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, about 15,780 people under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer each year, and about a quarter of them are not expected to survive the disease. At CHLA, each nurse is dedicated to no more than three children per shift on average. We consider the nurses who care for these young patients to be heroes.
I am particularly fond of them as my youngest sister, Meghan, works as a nurse in 4 East—one of the units in the hospital dedicated to these patients.
“It’s hard to describe what it’s like to work in this field. To most people, it seems like a sad and depressing place to go every day but there are more happy endings than sad ones. There is a bell we ring when a child has completed their treatment—we get to see that bell rung more often than not. Those days make all the hard ones worth it. It is a gift to be a part of the lives of these children and their families,” said Meghan Patterson, CHLA Hem/Onc Nurse.
