Online Marketing 101: How to Run the Marketing Race

In today's market, there is no shortage of lawyers lobbying for business online. Whether you're looking for criminal representation to help you with a DUI or you need help establishing a patent for your latest invention from a trademark attorney, legal professional are everywhere and there is usually more than a few choices for any given area of law. How do you choose?

It's this reality that begs the question: how do you STAND OUT against your competitors? The answer has a few steps, but they are all simple:

  • Positively display your differences
  • Engage your audience
  • Never put your marketing on "autopilot"

Positively Display Your Differences

When you are 1 of 100 people doing the same thing, you face a unique challenge in setting yourself apart from the competition. Luckily, there are many avenues in which you can attack this task. Do you hold a special accreditation that most of your colleagues and competition don't? Let your audience and potential clients know about it. Did you attend a training or seminar last month? Get the word out about it. Do you have more experience in your prospective field than most? Shout it from the online rooftops. To put in simple terms: the ability to be the green M&M in a sea of brown M&Ms is highly valuable.

Engage Your Audience

Unless you are a well-established firm or high profile lawyer, kicking your feet up and waiting for the business to come to you would not be a financially sound decision. In today's day and age of social media, online review sites, blogging, and mobile devices, the amount of information floating around on any given topic is staggering.

To attract that business, you need to take advantage of these channels. Post regularly on your social media profiles letting your followers, friends, and circle members know the great case result you just got; post a great looking picture of yourself at the next bar association function you attend. Bottom line: be involved with your audience and get yourself out there. The more positive information you put out about yourself and your achievements, the more awareness you'll have and the more engaged you'll be with your audience.

Never Put Your Marketing on Auto-Pilot

Let's say you've jumped into "Marketing 101" head-first; your social media page looks great and has tons of posts, you're blogging regularly, and you've carved out a great image for yourself in your field of law. Better yet, the phone is ringing. Time to kick those feet up right? WRONG. As it is said, "Complacency is the enemy of progress" and that statement could not apply more to online marketing. If you've managed to get ahead of the pack, you have to keep running to stay ahead. Marketing is a marathon, not a sprint. Once you take your foot off of the gas, you risk the possibility of the pack of guys behind you who do the same thing to catch up. And now, you're a part of the crowd again. Bottom line: the race is never over. Get your running shoes on.
