Google is simplifying how local service businesses earn trust online. Beginning in late 2025, the familiar “Google Guaranteed” and “Google Screened” badges are merging into one: the Google Verified badge.
This unified badge is more than a visual update, it represents Google’s ongoing push to help consumers find the most credible, responsive, and trustworthy home service providers in their area.
For businesses, it’s a call to raise the bar on responsiveness, reviews, and consistency across profiles.
As Scorpion’s Senior Product Manager, Caitlin Dapello, shared during a recent joint webinar with Elyse Goldman, Global Product Lead at Google, this evolution marks “one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in Local Services Ads (LSAs)” and one that will directly influence how businesses connect with new customers and drive qualified leads in 2026 and beyond.
Why Google Is Moving to “Verified”
For nearly a decade, Google’s Local Services Ads have helped consumers find trusted local pros by featuring verified businesses at the very top of search results. But over time, the multiple badge types (Guaranteed, Screened, and others) caused confusion.
Goldman explained, “When we did extensive research, both in focus groups and online testing, we found that consumers were confused. They couldn’t differentiate between the multiple badges and didn’t really understand the value of the money-back promise.”
Google’s response was to simplify. The Google Verified badge, displayed as a blue checkmark, now applies to all business categories within LSAs. It still highlights a business’s completed verification checks, such as licensing and background screening, but removes the outdated $2,000 money-back guarantee.
This change, Goldman noted, “puts the emphasis back where it belongs, on trust and transparency.”
What the Google Verified Badge Means for Your Business
While the badge unification may seem cosmetic, it signals deeper alignment between your Local Services Ad (LSA) and your Google Business Profile (GBP). Every LSA must now be linked to an active, verified GBP. That connection allows Google to confirm legitimacy, prevent fraud, and ensure consistent information across all listings.
“Your business is your business,” Goldman emphasized. “How you represent yourself should be the same across all Google properties. If you move or change your name, make sure those updates happen in both your GBP and LSA to avoid disconnecting your ad from your profile.”
For home services businesses, this means every update including new address, new hours, even a merger, should be reflected everywhere.
Partnering with an agency like Scorpion helps ensure those updates happen seamlessly, protecting your ad visibility and verification status.
The Proven Value of Local Services Ads
LSAs have quietly become one of the most efficient lead-generation channels in local marketing.
According to Scorpion’s internal data, the average cost per lead through LSAs is 51% lower than traditional search ads, while the cost per acquisition is 63% lower.
At Scorpion, LSAs now account for 35% of all client ad spend and that share continues to grow each year. “When you combine lower costs with higher-quality leads, it’s clear why LSAs outperform every other channel we run,” said Dapello.
But success with LSAs depends on more than ad spend. Visibility, responsiveness, and engagement all play a role in ranking higher and earning more qualified leads.
Four Factors That Influence Your LSA Ranking
Dapello outlined four key levers Scorpion uses to help clients improve their LSA rankings:
- Profile quality: High-quality photos, detailed service descriptions, and strong customer reviews all influence how trustworthy your profile appears.
- Lead responsiveness: Google tracks how quickly you answer calls and reply to messages. Unanswered calls or slow responses can hurt visibility.
- Badge eligibility: Staying verified and maintaining compliance with Google’s background, license, and insurance checks.
- Coverage and accessibility: Using every available feature, such as message leads, booking leads, and direct business search (DBS), gives customers more ways to reach you.
“The higher you rank, the more often your ad is shown and the more likely customers are to engage,” Dapello explained.
Why Responsiveness and Messaging Matter More Than Ever
If you’ve ever wondered why one competitor appears higher than another in LSAs, the answer may come down to speed. Google now displays your average response time directly in your ad.
“When customers see one business that responds in minutes versus another that responds in a day,” Dapello said, “they’re going to choose the one that answers faster.”
Google’s data shows that messaging doesn’t replace phone calls, it captures an entirely different audience.
“Adding messaging isn’t cannibalizing your calls,” Goldman clarified. “It’s incremental leads, especially nights and weekends when consumers prefer to text.”
For Scorpion clients, tools like Scorpion Convert automatically engage message leads in real time, acting as a virtual assistant that knows your brand and services. One recent Scorpion client converted their first message lead into a booked job within minutes after enabling Convert.
The Power of Consistent Feedback and Lead Quality Data
One of the most important ranking factors is feedback. Google’s newer lead rating system replaces the old dispute process, allowing businesses to rate the quality of each lead they receive.
“It’s very important to tell Google if you’re satisfied and why,” said Dapello. “Providing this data back influences their algorithms. You’re essentially telling them, ‘These are the types of leads I want.’”
To make that easier, Scorpion’s Quality AI analyzes every lead in real time, identifying whether it’s high quality or irrelevant (for example, outside your service area or a spam inquiry). That data is automatically shared with Google, improving your campaign performance and refund process.
Scorpion also provides instant auto-crediting, returning funds for invalid leads immediately rather than waiting weeks for Google’s reimbursement.
“We put that money right back to work for you,” Dapello said, “so you’re never penalized for low-quality leads.”
Connecting Your Website and Reviews: Small Details, Big Impact
Another emerging factor in 2026: Google is increasingly pulling dynamic callouts from your website and GBP to highlight offers, promotions, and differentiators directly in your ad.
For example, Google may feature a line such as “Complimentary home electrical safety check” if it appears on your website. Scorpion automatically enables this feature for every LSA client.
This adds yet another reason to keep your website content updated and consistent.
A well-maintained GBP, paired with a website that highlights your services and value, sends strong trust signals that improve both click-through rates and conversions.
Why Working with a Google Premier Partner (like Scorpion) Matters
Goldman put it plainly, “Anyone can run LSAs on their own, but working with a Google Premier Partner like Scorpion tends to deliver better results.”
That’s because Scorpion has a direct line to Google’s product and engineering teams, weekly escalation meetings, and early access to new betas such as the LSA promotion pilot that increased user engagement for participating businesses.
Dapello added, “Because of our partnership, we get daily data updates including everything from verification issues to geo-expansion recommendations. And, we use that to proactively optimize campaigns before problems arise.”
In short, Scorpion doesn’t just manage LSAs; we help shape how they evolve.
Preparing for the Future of LSAs
The move to the Google Verified badge represents a shift toward simplicity, consistency, and accountability. Businesses that focus on responsiveness, accurate profiles, and genuine customer engagement will benefit most.
To stay ahead:
- Keep your Google Business Profile and LSA information synced.
- Respond to every lead quickly, whether by call or message.
- Provide regular feedback on lead quality.
- Partner with experts who have a direct collaboration with Google and the tools to automate quality management.
As Dapello summarized, “LSAs continue to be one of the highest-return channels for local businesses and the ones that adapt quickly to changes like this will see the greatest impact.”
