How One Scorpion Employee Helped International Refugees

There are more than 68 million displaced people around the world.

These are people without a home.

People without a country.

And in the worst cases, people without a family.

International crises can devastate a community and a culture, and unfortunately, the people in the best position to help our often the farthest away.

Without global media coverage, many Americans would never hear about the life-and-death circumstances affecting the world’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised.

However, even among the Americans that are aware of these issues, many remain indifferent.

Many, but not all.

For one Scorpion employee, the ongoing crises affecting the world aren’t problems to be ignored; they’re problems to be solved.

So, when Chris Osterndorf (a content developer at Scorpion) was selected as April Employee of the Month (EoM) and given the opportunity to choose the charity the company would make its monthly donation to, he knew exactly where that donation belonged.

The International Rescue Committee.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global humanitarian aid organization, founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein. The organization works to provide emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. Serving 40 countries, and 26 US cities, the IRC helps to resettle refugees and transition them into becoming self-sufficient.

In 2018 alone, the IRC has been able to assist with the:

  • Schooling and education opportunities for 1.6 million children.
  • Creation and development of more than 20,000 businesses.
  • Training of 24,000 people on child protection, gender violence, and service delivery.

In deciding to support the International Rescue Committee, Chris had this to say:

“For me, the IRC just does a great job of addressing so many of the most important issues in the world—from helping families who have been separated at the border, to assisting individuals of all ages affected by the global refugee crisis, to providing resources and education for girls and women in parts of the world where they wouldn't normally have access to these necessities. I strongly believe in everything they do, and with World Refugee Day coming up soon, now is the best time to remind people of their work.”
