Brian Davis, Senior Vice President of Healthcare at Scorpion, hosted a webinar with Becker’s Hospital Review on a hot-button topic in the healthcare world—ADA compliance for hospital websites.

The webinar discussed the implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act for website owners, as well as why the ADA is especially relevant for hospital websites, and a review of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Signed into law in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination based on disability. However, in 2010, an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking supported changes to remove “access barriers” to include websites.

In the webinar, Brian highlights three reasons hospitals should consider bringing their websites into ADA compliance:

  1. A legal obligation

  2. A long-term business strategy

  3. A moral and ethical calling for healthcare providers

Web accessibility under the ADA follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which recommends websites be:

  • Perceivable
  • Operable
  • Understandable
  • Robust

Concluding the webinar, Brian offers a few tactics hospitals can use to meet the ADA website guidelines.
