Once again, the Scorpions faced the Dirtbags, but this time the stakes were higher: It was the summer season championship. Nothing like a little pressure to bring out the best in the team, right?
Scorpion hires a lot. And while we would never directly look for baseball backgrounds on resumes (or would we?), we welcome new hires onto our softball team with open arms. Unfortunately, the championship game is not so welcoming and the Scorpions entered the game limited to the original roster with no new blood in site.
After trailing all game and putting their fans through a gruelingly low-scoring 5 ½ innings, the Scorpions rallied to score nine runs, taking a 17-15 lead going into the final frame. Taking the field with only three outs needed to crown themselves summer champions, the Dirtbags silenced the Scorpion stands with four runs to pull ahead 19-17. The Scorpions fans’ hearts could not catch a break!
With the top of the lineup due up for the Scorpions, the men would set themselves up for a walkoff win. After a leadoff line out, the next two Scorpions took their bases on balls to bring up the cleanup hitter. A two-run triple electrified the crowd and tied up the game. With a stolen base (plus a little luck and two umpires making better calls this inning), a hard dash home and a throw just offline was enough for the Scorpions to come from behind and knock off the Dirtbags in the finals.
With a score of 20-19, the Scorpions took home the plaque, the championship shirts, and a sense of accomplishment that can only be felt by the winning team.
