Did you know that, in the U.S., 1 out of every 5 minutes online is spent on social networking? That social media interaction gives you a huge opportunity to amp up brand awareness and recognition, and attract more new business.
Here are 5 tips to get you started:
Tip 1: Use the social platforms that make the most sense for your customers.
Okay, let’s say my ideal customer is a tech-savvy, working professional in their 30s. And your customer is an older individual who is entering into retirement. Chances are my customer isn't going to be spending the majority of their time on the same social platforms as your customer.
Figuring out where your ideal prospects are hanging out on social media - be it Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn - is going to take some trial and error, but also a good amount of research. If you're new to social media, Facebook is a good place to start. It has over 1.1 billion users. Plus, it can provide you with valuable data on how potential customers interact with your content and ads on a social platform.
Tip 2: Post frequently.
Nothing kills your social media success faster than a stagnant profile. A blank, forlorn Facebook page says to potential customers that your business might be doing poorly. Posting on a regular basis can help engage and build trust in your prospects - but don’t post just for the sake of posting! Publish a variety of content that helps or educates visitors in some way. Post things that deliver value.
You can post:
- Company updates
- Links to articles
- Information about special deals and promotions
…And so much more.
Tip 3: Take the time to respond to comments.
Have you ever walked into a store, approached an employee to ask a question, and been ignored? Your social media profiles are kind of like a virtual storefront. Don’t. Ignore. Your Prospects. A like, comment, or share on your page or profile is the perfect opportunity to engage with your followers - followers who can become new customers. When your audience is engaging with your business online, that means you’re on their mind—and that can lead to future business.
Tip 4: Run ads and sponsored posts for greater exposure and audience targeting.
Imagine your local newspaper gives you a free ad spot to showcase your business - but only 2% of readers ever see it. But that’s the reality of organic posts - or non-paid posting - on social media. You’re putting in the time to deliver a post - maybe even paying for the creative - and only 2% of your followers will ever see it.
Organic posts just don’t get the amount of exposure for your business that you need to make a significant impact on attracting new customers. Remember, there are billions of users on social media and you’re competing against other businesses all vying for their attention. Social media ads and sponsored content make a much larger impact. With social media advertising, you can:
- Expand your audience, and
- Reach a more targeted audience, based on factors such as age, location, gender, and interests.
Plus, social media advertising is still relatively inexpensive. Targeting really specific kinds of social media users - the ones most in need of your business services or products - means you have a much better chance of getting higher return on investment.
Tip 5: Track your results.
One great thing about social media is that it’s super easy to track your data. Unlike TV and radio, you can see exactly how many people are seeing your posts and ads, how they’re interacting with them, and even the type of audience you’re reaching.
Take the time to review your analytics to learn about your customers, and also to figure out which posts and ads are getting the most engagement, and which ones need a little help. Use what you learn to not only fine-tune your social media strategy, but also to learn how you should market to your customers in general. Knowledge is power - or in this case, knowledge can mean more business.
