As one of the leading causes of death, over 600,000 Americans will die from it this year alone.
But thankfully, the statistic is progressively getting better. Compared to 2017, cancer mortality has dropped another 1.7%, and overall, the death rate of cancer has been declining steadily over the past 20 years.
Every month, Scorpion takes the opportunity to recognize a single employee from each of its departments. From there, one employee of the month (EoM) is chosen at random and is given the opportunity to pick a charity of their choice to donate to on behalf of the company.
For the month of December, Scorpion content writer Dana Grove was selected to represent Scorpion Cares (the company’s philanthropic arm). When asked which organization she would like to contribute to, the answer was both personal and immediate—The American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) was founded in 1913 by 10 doctors and 5 hospital staff members in New York City. At a time when a cancer diagnosis meant certain death, the disease was harshly stigmatized with many afflicted keeping it to themselves, or worse, with doctors refusing to tell them. The ACS was created to combat that, spread awareness, develop research, treatments, and bring cancer and those affected by it out into the light.
With a mission statement to “save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer,” the ACS has dedicated themselves to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through prevention, improved treatment, and educational awareness.
Since 1991, the ACS has contributed to a 25% decrease in the overall U.S. cancer death rate; that means more than 2 million people have survived as a result of their efforts.
Which is why for Dana, the choice of picking the ACS was a no-brainer:
“When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I learned firsthand what it’s like to ask your doctors a question they simply don’t have an answer to. She battled cancer for 3 years, and in that time, not a day passed by that we weren’t researching potential treatment options for the pain and discomfort of chemotherapy and radiation. Although she lost her battle, I hope that with more time and funds, the American Cancer Society can continue to find more progressive treatments for cancer, and eventually, a cure.”
If you’ve been touched by cancer, or know someone who has, and you’d like to donate to the incredible research and awareness prevention the American Cancer Society conducts every day, you can contribute here.
